Landing Page Design: How to Build Pages That Turn Clicks Into Leads

If you’re paying for Google Ads or Facebook campaigns and sending every click to your homepage, you’re probably leaving money on the table. Your homepage has to speak to everyone — new visitors, existing customers, job seekers, suppliers. A landing page has just one job: get the person who clicked your ad to take the next step.

For small and medium Australian businesses, a well-designed landing page is often the single biggest lever for improving advertising returns. It’s not unusual to see conversion rates double when a business moves from “send traffic to the homepage” to dedicated, focused pages. Here’s how to design landing pages that actually turn clicks into leads.

What Makes a Landing Page Different?

A landing page is a standalone page built around a single offer or goal — booking a consultation, requesting a quote, downloading a guide or buying a specific product. It usually strips away the main navigation and anything else that might distract visitors from that one action.

Think of it like this: if someone searches “emergency plumber Richmond” and clicks your ad, they don’t want to read your company history. They want to know you service Richmond, you can come today, and how to call you. A landing page gives them exactly that, and nothing more.

1. Match the Message to the Ad

The most common landing page mistake is a disconnect between the ad and the page. If your ad promises “Free Kitchen Renovation Quotes in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs”, your landing page headline should say almost exactly that. When visitors land on a page that confirms they’re in the right place, they stay. When they don’t, they hit the back button within seconds.

This “message match” also helps your Google Ads Quality Score, which can lower your cost per click. Create separate landing pages for your main services or campaigns rather than one generic page for everything.

2. Write a Headline That Sells the Outcome

Your headline is the first — and often only — thing visitors read. Focus on the result your customer wants, not the features of your service. “Accounting Services” is forgettable. “Stop Stressing About Tax Time — Fixed-Fee Bookkeeping for Melbourne Tradies” speaks directly to a pain point and an audience.

Support the headline with a short subheading that adds detail or addresses the biggest objection, such as price, speed or location.

3. Use One Clear Call to Action

Every landing page should have one primary call to action (CTA). Give people too many choices — call us, follow us on Instagram, read our blog, sign up to our newsletter — and many will choose nothing at all.

  • Make the button specific: “Get My Free Quote” beats “Submit” every time.
  • Repeat it: Place the CTA above the fold and again further down the page for people who need more convincing.
  • Make it stand out: Use a contrasting colour so the button is impossible to miss.
  • Add click-to-call on mobile: For service businesses, a tappable phone number often outperforms a form.

4. Keep Forms Short

Every extra field on your form reduces the number of people who complete it. Ask only for what you genuinely need to follow up — usually name, phone or email, and perhaps one qualifying question like suburb or service type. You can gather the rest during the first conversation.

If you need more detail, consider a multi-step form. Starting with an easy question (“What type of project is it?”) gets people committed before you ask for contact details.

5. Build Trust Quickly

Visitors arriving from an ad usually don’t know you yet. Trust signals help bridge that gap:

  • Google reviews and star ratings, ideally with names and suburbs
  • Short testimonials placed near the call to action
  • Logos of well-known clients, industry associations or certifications
  • Real photos of your team and work, rather than generic stock images
  • Guarantees, such as “No call-out fee” or “Fixed quote, no surprises”

We’ve written more about this in our guide to how online reviews and social proof can grow your business.

6. Design for Mobile First

Most paid social traffic and a large share of Google Ads clicks come from smartphones. Your landing page needs to load fast, read easily on a small screen and make the CTA reachable with a thumb. Test it on your own phone, on mobile data, while standing at a tram stop — that’s how many of your customers will see it.

Our article on mobile-first website design covers the essentials in more depth.

7. Make It Fast

Speed has a direct impact on conversions. Every extra second of loading time costs you visitors — and when you’re paying per click, those lost visitors are wasted budget. Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and videos above the fold, and keep third-party scripts to a minimum. Aim for your page to load in under two to three seconds on mobile.

8. Test, Measure and Improve

A landing page is never really finished. Set up conversion tracking in Google Analytics 4 and Google Ads so you know exactly how many enquiries each page generates. Then test one change at a time — a different headline, a shorter form, a new hero image — and keep whatever works better.

Even small improvements add up. Lifting your conversion rate from 3% to 6% effectively halves your cost per lead without spending a cent more on ads.

Common Landing Page Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sending all ad traffic to the homepage
  • Vague headlines that don’t mention the offer or location
  • Full site navigation that lets visitors wander off
  • Long forms asking for information you don’t need yet
  • No reviews, testimonials or proof you’re a real local business
  • Never checking how the page performs on mobile
